Updates

May 17, 2020: We are participating in the new UW System collaborative M.S. in Cybersecurity program and I'm honored to serve as the academic director for UW-Stevens Point. Check out the program website for more details.

May 6, 2020: CNMT students participated in the annual College of Letters and Science Undergraduate Research Symposium. Congrats to Matt, Stephen and Shane for great work on their project and the poster presentation!

June 6, 2019: Our paper on the re-design of AgInjuryNews.org was accepted to JMIR Formative Research! Check out the accepted version of the paper for details.

January 7, 2019: Our paper on mobile augmented reality for rural first responders was accepted to JMIR mHealth and uHealth!

October 23, 2018: Our paper on developing guidelines for developing data analytics tools for assessing interactions in industrial system was just published in the Academic Mindtrek conference.

July 15, 2018: The last 11 months have been very busy! Papers on our work on cross-cultural and collaborative applications were accepted to TACCESS and IDC and several papers and grant applications are in the works.

Our Human-Technology Interaction program is also undergoing small changes – now called Web Development to reflect the Web-oriented nature of the curriculum.

Last but not least, we received a mini grant to build a Raspberry Pi cluster to support the Data Analytics and Computer Information Systems programs.

August 23, 2017: Our article on the long-term deployment of Information Wall and the subsequent analysis process was accepted to IJHCI! Kudos to Ville for the hard work on analyzing the data and developing and revising the paper. A couple of papers on the preliminary work on using heart rate variability (HRV) as a signal to assessing information ergonomics were accepted to AHFE and Academic MindTrek. Last but not least, our paper on data analytics and visualization for interaction log was presented in the annual InfoVis conference in London.

May 19, 2017: CHI in Denver was fun and shortly before I also got a notice that our paper on industrial systems usage data analytics was accepted to the Information Visualisation conference. Also working on a few other manuscripts and waiting for review results from journals -- busy times!

The big news right now is that we're launching our new major in Human-Technology Interaction in the fall -- the only university in Wisconsin to offer one as an undergraduate degree.

January 16, 2017: CHI results are in and this time around two of our papers were accepted! Keep an eye out in Denver for the paper on utilizing experience goals in the design of industrial systems and one on the challenges posed by external factors for public display deployments (see the adjacent columnt for authors and paper titles). We also have a late breaking work under review, so need to wait for a few more weeks for the final tally.

November 5, 2016: A few exciting updates now that I've through most of the backlog after a busy start to the semester. Our paper on science fiction prototyping won the best paper award in the Intelligent Environments conference and the work led by Sumita at TAUCHI on developing gesture-based interaction for individuals with developmental disabilities was nominated for best paper in ASSETS '16! I also collaborated with folks back in Finland on a paper presented in in the BELIV workshop during VisWeek. Still waiting for CHI results...

July 5, 2016: Just arrived back home from a great trip to Finland, where I presented our paper in PerDis'16. In the meanwhile, one paper was conditionally accepted and several new papers are in the works to CHI and TOCHI, more news to come.

April 22, 2016: Our papers on designing multimodal interaction for process control rooms and identifying industrial UX data logging needs were accepted to PerDis'16 and ECIS'16, respectively. Oulu in June, here we come!

March 5, 2017: I had the opportunity to give a talk on UX and usability for the Central Wisconsin Developers Group last week. It was great to get a large audience -- learning about UX seems to be definitely of interest to local developers!

December 24, 2015: A couple of Christmas updates:
Our paper on gesture-based interfaces has been in the pipeline for some time now but it got finally published in Tietojenkäsittelytiede.

The final report for the UXUS project was also recently published. Several articles in the report showcase the work we carried out at TAUCHI with industrial partners. The report is available in FIMECC HighTech Results.

October 18, 2015: Lots of news to update after a brief hiatus. I started as a tenure-track faculty member at the Department of Computing and New Media Technologies at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point this semester.

In addition, we've had a couple of papers accepted with my former colleagues at TAUCHI -- one dealing with collaborative navigation in virtual worlds in the prestigious ACM VRST '15 symposium and the other one focusing on user interaction patterns in e-books in The Scientific World Journal.

August 21, 2015: Our paper on designing computer-supported communication interventions for children with autism was accepted to CSCW 2016!

July 29, 2015: A book chapter I authored on category-based mobile search interfaces was published as a part of Emerging Perspectives on the Design, Use, and Evaluation of Mobile and Handheld Devices.
